Many fans of Diablo series know Cain as the "Elder" of Tristram D2R Items which was the central point of the very first Diablo game. He has been throughout the series, in the same way in some way. However, he died in the first game in Diablo 3. so seeing the scholarly old man in the upcoming D2R Ladder gameplay is unlikely, but it would be worth reading the story of his life in anticipation of its launch.

Deckard Cain has been described as a Horadric scholar who is proficient in the obscure lore of Sanctuary and its arcane history.
